Late Oct. Madison

I spent a day this weekend doing the streamer thing on the Madison with Sarah. The morning started nice and cloudy, perfect for ripping meaty sculpin patterns but it didn't take long for the sun and the blue bird Skies to show up. Always bad combo when you add the low clear water. Despite the less that ideal streamer conditions we still found a few fish hiding from the sun tight to the bank or in the gut of the pools.

10/25 Bear Trap

I fished the Upper bear trap on the madison saturday just below Ennis Dam. It was an ok day of fishing probably due to the water still being muddy from Ennis lake. It was colder in the morning but as the day progressed the clouds went away and the sun came out. The set-up of the day seemed to be any olive green bugger with a pink midge dropper. Also caught some fish on olive bead head soft hackles and lightning bugs. Some fish were rising here and there to baetis flies, but nothing would touch a dry fly. The fish we caught were earlier in the morning and around 12:30 - 1:00 the fishing slowed down.

Wild Steelhead Festival

Well it feels and looks a lot like winter out there. Some of our local trout bums have put the fly rods down for a bit so they can take advantage of the fresh powder that old Mother Nature has dumped on us over the last few days. It won't last long though. It looks like we'll be getting back to more seasonal weather with temps in the 50's over the next 5-6 days.

Don't forget to do your part on Nov. 5th and attend the Wilde Steelhead Festival and see the new movie Raising The Ghost by Bozeman stealhead rock stars, the Fly Boys. Paul, Jess, and Nick have put out one hell of a flick that has plenty of B.C. fish porn, but more importantly the film has a strong message and interviews with experts on the endangered wild Steelhead population.
